The Spanish Quarter stands on the northern slope of Mount Erice, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Construction began in the seventeenth century under Spanish rule to house a military garrison, but the project was never completed.
Votive deposits containing lamps and terracotta objects found nearby testify to the site’s much older use and may be connected with the cult of the ancient goddess of Erice. Today, history, archaeology and landscape come together in one of the town’s most evocative places.
